PITA BURGER

Not long ago I posted my home baked pita bread recipe. So with pita in the freezer I was set to make my pita burgers. Slightly different approach to a burger but since ground meat is involved I just named it "pita burger". It's easy, quick, crunchy, spicy, and delicious :)

PITA BURGER (8 6inch pita burgers)
(For the printable version click here)

Ingredients:
2 cups ground lamb
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 large ripe tomato, diced
¼ cup pickled jalapeno peppers, finely chopped
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp crushed chili peppers
½ tsp ground cumin
2 tbsp olive oil
¼ tsp ground ginger
8 pita breads, 6 inch
¼ cup olive oil, for smothering the pita

Directions:
In a big bowl, mix all the ingredients.

Open pita bread and start filling them with meat mixture, approximately ¼ cup of filling per pita bread. Press the meat mixture firmly onto the bread.

Smother both sides of pita generously with olive oil and bake in 500*F preheated oven for 7 minutes on each side or until bread is browned and crunchy. Serve with pickled banana peppers, Greek yogurt, salad or maybe salsa or your favorite sauce.

TIP1: Use deep baking pan to prevent smoking for there will be some oil splattering involved. First time I made them I used shallow baking pan and my fire alarm went off, yaycks!

TIP2: Pita burger is also very tasty when grilled. Just make sure that the flame is low and not too hot!

  5. That is a great idea! One of my favorite things to eat in the world is a doner kebab, and this is kind of close to that ... right? Either way, it looks delicious!

  8. Thank you for pita friendly comments ;)
Rich: I think that another name for doner kebob is gyro, but I used similar spices, so yes they are close in taste :)
